The low-budget turned blockbuster of the ’80s, “Dirty Dancing,” turns 25 this year. Let’s find out what the cast has been up to since Baby and Johnny Castle had the time of their life at Kellerman’s resort.
Jennifer Grey (Character: Frances “Baby” Houseman)
Not long after the movie, Grey had rhinoplasty surgery, a decision she later regretted. The plastic surgery created such a dramatic change to her appearance, Grey’s closest friends didn’t recognize her. Unfortunately, this change negatively affected her career so much Grey considered changing her stage name and starting over. Instead, she decided to make fun of her circumstance by portraying a fictional version of herself in the 1999 sitcom “It’s Like, You Know.” Most recently, Grey appeared on Season 11 of “Dancing with the Stars,” and won the competition. Grey just completed filming on the sci-film “In Your Eyes,” co-starring Nikki Reed and Steve Howey. Grey married actor Clark Gregg (“The New Adventures of Old Christine”) and the couple has one daughter, Stella.
Patrick Swayze (Character: Johnny Castle)
After “Dirty Dancing,” Swayze went on to enjoy success on the big screen with hits like “Road House,” “Ghost,” and “Point Break.” He also made a cameo appearance in the 2004 sequel to “Dirty Dancing.” In 2008, Swayze had the leading role in the TV series “The Beast;” however, he wasn’t able to work on the show for long due to his failing health. In 2008, Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Sadly, he lost his fight against the disease in September 2009, passing away at the age of 57.
Jerry Orbach (Character: Dr. Jake Houseman)
Jerry Orbach played Baby’s father, Dr. Houseman. After filming, he went on to play Detective Lennie Biscoe on “Law & Order” from 1992-2004. Orbach also provided the voice for Lumiere in Disney’s 1991 “Beauty and the Beast.” Orbach died of prostate cancer in 2004 at the age of 69.
Kelly Bishop (Character: Marjorie Houseman)
After “Dirty Dancing,” Bishop continued to work in Hollywood and finally landed the role of the stern family matriarch, Emily Gilmore, on “Gilmore Girls” from 2000 to 2007. Most recently, Bishop appeared in the 2011 movie, “A Novel Romance.” Bishop lives in New Jersey with her husband, television talk-show host Lee Leonard.
Cynthia Rhodes (Character: Penny Johnson)
Cynthia Rhodes showcased her dance movies in “Flashdance” and “Staying Alive.” She also portrayed “Rosanna” in the Toto’s 1982 music video of the same title. After “Dirty Dancing,” Rhodes appeared in one more movie, “Curse of the Crystal Eye” in 1993, before she left Hollywood for motherhood to her three sons with singer-producer Richard Marx, who she married in 1989.
Jack Weston (Character: Max Kellerman)
Jack Weston played Max Kellerman, owner of Kellerman’s resort. After “Dirty Dancing” Weston only appeared in two more movies, “Ishtar,” which was also released in 1987 and “Short Circuit,” which was released the following year. Weston died in 1996 at the age of 71 from lymphoma.
Lonny Price (Character: Neil Kellerman)
Price popped up in a few television shows over the years, including “The Gold Girls,” “Dear John,” and “Law & Order.” Most recently, Price appeared in a 2007 special on “Dirty Dancing.” Price also co-wrote, starred in, and directed the play “A Class Act,” which he received a Tony Award nomination for in 2000. Most recently, Price directed several episodes of “Desperate Housewives.”
